The pig industry in Africa has undergone notable transformations over the years, reflecting shifts in agricultural practices, economic conditions, and societal demands. The pig population of Africa represents 4.6% of the global pig population with Nigeria and Malawi standing as the only countries having over 5 million pig population of 9.51 and 8.07 million pigs respectively (FAO2023). As at 2022, Southern Africa has the highest per capita pork consumption (3.99 kg) in Africa (FAO 2023). Pigs are widely distributed across Africa except in Northern Africa where pig production is not popular due to religio-cultural reasons.
The industry has faced challenges ranging from limited infrastructures, incidence of disease outbreaks, especially Africa swine fever, high cost of feedstuffs and lack of technical knowledge and skills among many others. However, the present day industry is experiencing renewed interest and investment.
Looking ahead, the prospects of Africa's pig industry appear promising, with significant untapped potentials awaiting exploration through strategic partnerships, knowledge exchange initiatives, Leveraging advancements in technology will be essential in unlocking the full potential of the pig industry in Africa.
